Azek, a provider of building materials, has released a new virtual reality application that lets consumers visually build and explore rooms with Azek products before they go and purchase them.

The new program takes advantage of both virtual reality and augmented reality to let consumer see their deck being built in real time. Once the virtual deck has been assembled, the pieces used can be easily purchased through the app.

“AZEK and TimberTech are natural choices when investing in a new, high-performance deck made with premium materials,” said AZEK Building Products CMO Julia Fitzgerald. “By giving homeowners the ability to visualize all the design possibilities including lighting, railings and color choices, customers have greater confidence in their decisions and walk away with more satisfaction in the final product.”

With the prospect of virtual and augmented reality as a tool for customer engagement, many brands are making use of those technologies both to market their products and to let customers get a test run of them.

Virtual reality has mainly been the domain of marketers as opposed to retailers, offering branded video content and live broadcasts as a way of drawing attention to consumer products.

Augmented reality on the other hand is where retailers shine, letting users test out and view products before they buy them.

Azek is the next big retail brand to make use of augmented reality to improve the customer experience and let them test out products beforehand.

Specifically, a new augmented reality product will allow Azek customers to virtually build their own outdoor deck using Azek products.

Once consumers have finished building their virtual deck from within the app, they will be able to view required tools and recommended tips for building the deck they have created.

Finally, customers can then purchase the materials directly to finish creating their deck.

Augmented reality
Augmented reality has proven itself to be a valuable tool for retailers, letting consumers have a sort of virtual hands on experience with products before they actually make the purchase.

Mainly, this type of interaction has been reserved for beauty apps and products, such as Ardell, which made use of a similar technology from an app called YouCam to let customers try on makeup before they purchased it (see story).

Another beauty product supplier, Meitu, tried a similar tactic (see story).

But now, home improvement retailers are getting in on the action as well.

“The customer experience behind the AZEK Deck Designer is forward-thinking and innovative, with sleek, photo-real graphics making it possible for users to see their design choices up-close,” said Beck Besecker, CEO and Co-Founder of Marxent. “It’s a great example of how advanced 3D product visualization is designed to help contractors communicate and estimate projects for homeowners, all with the end goal of helping buyers to have total confidence in their product choices.”
